4 - Welcome to The Curly Buzz.

The Curly Buzz is an online broadcast of interesting people, information, events and products that are buzzing in the virtual natural hair community.

The Curly Buzz’s Newly Natural Guide will discuss deciding to go natural, Building your Healthy Hair Regimen, Choosing Products and styling your newly natural hair.  This newly natural guide will also give fellow YouTubers who can help make your decision to go natural more informed.

Going Natural
The term going natural simply means to decide to stop relaxing your hair and do one of three things to get to your un-relaxed hair.  1. Big chop which is cutting off the relaxed strands of hair down to the new growth 2.  Transition which is growing your hair for several months or years without getting a relaxer and then cutting off the relaxed ends, 3.  Mini-chops meaning to grow your hair without getting a relaxer and periodically cut several inches of hair until all the relaxed ends are all cut off.

Deciding to go natural can be liberating, can give a sense of power but for some it’s a last resort because of unhealthy hair practices.

LipStickLoveAffair has a video entitled “Yes…You, Me, We can…go natural” she discussing why she decided to go natural and she encourages others that Yes you can go natural too.  Despite all the negativity that you my encounter, going natural is possible and there’s support for you, if you choose to go natural.

EbonyGirlSpeaks also has a video explaining why she went natural after deciding that she wanted healthier hair.  When she started her YouTube channel, she was relaxed so on her channel you are able to see her actually doing the Big Chop!

Building a Healthy Hair Regimen
However it is that you embark on your natural hair journey we all eventually have the same question, “What am I going to do with my hair.” Knowledge is key and when you go natural that statement is truer than ever.

Building a healthy hair regimen will help you get to learn your hair’s likes and dislikes, helps you be able to schedule time for taking care of your hair and it helps you to remember everything that you need to do to your hair.  Your new regimen needs to be written down and referred back to until you can memorize all the steps.

NaturalHairGrowthShow has a video that discusses the importance of having a hair care regimen.  She gives examples and advice to build your regimen.
When you are ready to build your healthy hair care regimen there should be at least five steps included as your base regimen.  But never fear, you’re not attached to the products you choose at first, you can tweak your regimen at any time, just keep at least the five basic steps included.
Those steps are cleansing, conditioning, detangling, moisturizing and sealing, and styling.

There are proper ways to wash, condition and detangle your natural hair.  swimfe has a two part demonstration video showing how she washes, conditions and detangles her natural hair.
Moisturizing and sealing goes hand in hand.   Natural hair typically is very dry so we have to add moisture to keep the ends of our hair from becoming dry and brittle. Once moisture is added then that moisture needs to be sealed in with oil to lock the moisture in.

Ajwitafro has a short but to the point video that demonstrates her moisturizing and sealing her ends.

Choosing Products
Knowledge and Research are really important when choosing products to use on your natural hair.  People can be very opinionated about what you should put on your hair but there is nothing better than doing your own research and deciding which product ingredients don’t work for your hair.

There’s an older video by presuchz21 that lists out different ingredients that are typically found in hair care products.  She tells you the good, the bad and the ugly.
Godzdesign1 and Nikkiemae2002 each have videos that encourage everyone to not just accept the motto “don’t use that, it’s bad for your hair” but to do your own research and determine if a product is really bad for your hair.

Example, We often hear how alcohols are bad for our hair but Cocomodiva has actually did some research on her own that contradicts that.  She has a video where she has research several different types of alcohols and realized that yes, some alcohols are bad for your hair but there are also some alcohols that can be beneficial to your hair.
Do some research on your own and you might be surprised at what you’re missing out on.
Styling

For newly naturals, whether big chopped or transitioned, styling is a hurdle that has to be jumped with some enthusiasm and creativity.  The question again is, What am I going to do with my hair?

For TWA styles you should check out IKnowLee, InTheTikiLounge and Essentials4You they all have slide shows with ideas for your TWA.

For transitioning styles check out LongHairDontCareLLC, she actually transitioned for over two years before big chopping to arm pit length hair. She has some styling tutorials that will help you out in a styling crisis.

This is a Newly Natural Guide that will hopefully help you jump start your natural hair journey.

3 - Welcome to The Curly Buzz.

The Curly Buzz is an online broadcast of interesting people, information, events and products that are buzzing in the virtual natural hair community.
Today’s topics are Youtubers, Hair Typing, Getting Your Fit On and Styling Options
YouTuber Spot Light

Today we are going to spotlight three tightly coiled natural hair YouTubers.
NotoriouslyNappy1 has been natural for a little over two years and she makes some creative natural hair tutorial videos.  Her natural locs are so thick and luscious and she has a retro inspired pin up hair style that’s to die for.
20PearlsnCurls started making YouTube videos when she 6 months natural and has been documenting her teeny weeny afro journey.  For those of you who are newly naturals her channel gives great styling options for TWAs.
TheNaprika is a London natural who gives hair tutorials, product reviews  and has a new question and answer series that features her mom.

Hair Typing
Hair typing is a really huge deal in the natural hair community.  Hair typing is simply determining your natural hair’s curl pattern on a range of one to four and your hair’s texture on a range of A-C.
Hair typing is quite controversial but Keythema gives five great reasons why knowing your hair type is important.   When you know your hair type, you can search for other YouTubers with the same hair type to find styling tutorials, product reviews and tips for hair care.
There are some YouTubers who don’t want to be put in a category but 11zeaky has a video discussing this subject and she compares hair typing to being typed for makeup foundation for your face.
BlackWomanScholar even chimed in on the hair typing topic and said that when someone states their hair type then she can visualize their hair styling issues they are dealing with.  She also talks about the cunta kentee references to natural hair.
If you guys know of someone with a really good current video on hair typing let me know and I can add it to the description of this video.

Get your fit on
When I decided to focus on growing healthy hair, I realized that I was spending a lot of time on the external.   I later decided that I needed to put just as much emphasis on my internal health as I was putting on my hair.  If the internal is healthy then it passes through to the external.

Evelyn Prather’s YouTube channel is dedicated to helping you become a healthier you.  Not only does she have natural hair videos, but she also has exercising, eating and drinking water challenges.  She’s a vegan who’s lost a ton of weight by making healthier choices.

If swimming is your exercise of choice then have no fear that your natural hair will get damaged by all the chlorine in the pool.  Cassidy from NaturalSelectionBlog has a great video that shows you how to prepare your hair before jumping in the pool and she shows after pool care for natural hair.

If you need any inspiration then there’s BudgetQueen79’s YouTube channel.  This natural has lost over 60 pounds and doesn’t look like she’s planning on stopping anytime soon.  She talks about not being sabotaged, healthy eating and she does exercise videos.

Styles
Learning to style your natural hair is like a rite of passage. And for many learning to style can be daunting and somewhat overwhelming.  But never fear, there are YouTubers with excellent, easy to follow tutorials to help you learn styling techniques.

Twists – AfrikanHairGod has a really detailed tutorial video on 2-strands flat twists.  He and yes, I did say he, is awesome at doing 2 strand twists.  He has several video on styles that incorporate 2 strand twist in one way or another.

BlessedCurlyGurlz has a video that shows the slow motion technique of cornrowing hair.  She is cornrowing her daughter’s hair and gives a basic guide to learning how to cornrow.

Toliahli has a really nice tutorial for doing finger coils that she later turns into a twist out.  She also has a tutorials on starter loc twists.

2 - Welcome to The Curly Buzz.
The Curly Buzz is an online broadcast of interesting people, information, events and products that are buzzing in the virtual natural hair community.

Today’s topics are Youtubers, Terminology, Reading Pleasures and Online Communities.
YouTube Spot Light

There are several different ways to wear natural hair and this week we are spotlighting three very different Natural Hair YouTubers; a loose, locked and transitioning natural.

Journeytomyroots is a focused natural hair YouTuber who tells you upfront what you will and will not get on her YouTube channel.   Just check out her info bar.  She’s a dyed natural, who has very clear, concise and informative videos on her channel.  She just uploaded a great video about how to preserve twist outs, braids out and bantu knot outs.

Locs are rope like strands that are formed when the hair locks on itself. The hair is not combed and the strands that are normally combed or shed are coiled around themselves to form locs.  There’s a huge presence of YouTubers with locs.  Decor8mylife is a professional who wears her locs with pride.  She recently uploaded a YouTube video discussing interviewing with locs and wearing locs in the professional world.  She’s documenting her locked hair journey and does styling tutorials for locs on her YouTube channel.

She’s titled herself an Unofficial Transitioner .  MissThis897 hasn’t had a relaxer in over 16 months but she has no set plans to big chop, at least not before 18 months of un-officially transitioning.  Her transitioning journey is being documented on her YouTube channel.   She has great tips and hair tutorials for anyone who is transitioning from relaxed to natural hair.

Natural Hair Terminology
If you’re anything like me, sometimes I get lost with all the natural hair terms.  I search for hours upon  hours on trying to figure what the terms really means.  We are going to discuss three natural hair terms

Shingling is the art of using products and maybe a blow dryer to define the natural curls and coils of your hair. SheadJones has a tutorial video that guides us through the process of her shingling her hair.

Wet Bunning is simply, styling your wet, moisturized natural hair in a bun that can last for a few days.  DenimPixie has a tutorial on her YouTube channel on exactly how to wet bun your hair.

Banding is a technique that’s used to stretched natural hair. As natural hair dries, it bound to shrink because that’s the nature of our hair.  You can twist your hair and use hair bands to eliminate some of the shrinking.  Mrskw7 has a really easy to follow tutorial on hair banding.

Reading Pleasure
The Science of Black Hair book by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy has been buzzing around the natural hair community for the past few months.  It’s a comprehensive guide to textured hair.  LadyHill7, AfricanExport and SoulSister75 have all featured the book on their YouTube channel and given it excellent reviews. SoulSister75 has even said that it’s imperative that you buy this book and not just because she’s featured in it but because it has great natural hair care information.

NaturaleeHappee has a natural hair book review video on her new natural hair YouTube channel.  She gives a quick but thorough review of four different natural hair books that she’s read.

Amatye79 gives “Thank God I’m Natural” by Chris-Tia Donaldson an awesome review.  She says the books incorporates so much information that has to deal with going natural and she encourages moms to read this book before decided to relax their children’s hair.

Online Natural Hair Community
Social networking has been a true savior to many of us.  And I’m not just talking about any social networking sites, I’m talking about social networking sites that are dedicated to healthy hair care.  There’s encouragement, shared experiences and a sense of belonging when you join healthy hair social networking sites.  So get involved.

SeeMyHealthyHair  has started an online social networking site that’s a natural black hair care forum for styles, growth and products.  Seemyhairgrow.ning.com

SunshineLovesPeace started an online social networking site where natural hair is the norm.  naturalsunshine.ning.com

KISSseventyseven also has a social networking site, keepitsimplesista.ning.com that full of KISS sisters.

Episode 1 of The Curly Buzz

The Curly Buzz
Welcome to the first installment of The Curly Buzz.
The Curly Buzz is an online broadcast of interesting people, information, events and products that are buzzing in the virtual natural hair community.
Today’s topics are Youtubers, Meetups, Challenges and Video Help.

Youtuber Spot Light
If it were not for the YouTubers uploading videos then we wouldn’t know half the stuff we know about natural hair.  YouTubers are out Godsend and I love them all and these are just three who’re in the buzz.
TastiRedBone is your goto girl for reviews.  She’s always reviewing new products and don’t mind telling the truth about a product! I love honest reviews and she gives totally honest reviews, not only about the product, but about the packaging, customer service and mail time.
It’s summertime and natural hair care can become a challenge for some.  160days2lose has uploaded two videos of a three part series, “Tips for Natural Hair Care in the Summer” to help us learn how to keep our natural hair from becoming a dry and brittle in sweltering heat of summer.
If you want to see real big hair then Kylahsmom1 is your woman.  A self proclaimed product junkie, she does twist outs, henna treatments and product reviews.

Meet-ups!
It’s summertime and meet-ups are happening all over the country.  The big cities aren’t the only places hosting meet-ups nowadays.  So, more than likely there’s a meet-up within a couple of hours from where you live.
To name a few,
SilkySwag is hosting a meet-up in the DC area on August 13th.
HairCrush has announced that she’s attending the Two Little Black Girls Natural Hair Sip and Social that’s in Jackson, Mississippi.
MissLeeLee37 is planning a meet-up for this fall in Columbus, Georgia.
Just search here on YouTube or on Google for meet-ups in your area.  If you don’t find a meet-up in your area or you’re not willing to travel, then you can plan a meet-up for your area.  Guaranteed there are naturals in your area who are willing to attend.

Challenges!
Challenges, challenges, challenges!
Participating in hair challenges is a great way to encourage hair growth, increase hair retention and promote healthy hair.   Some hair challenges are as little one week and can go to three months, six months, or even up to a year.  Hair challenges are not to be taken lightly and completing a challenge is just as important as starting one.
Blueotlisa has a six month healthy hair challenge going on now until December 31st.  I don’t think it’s too late to join her challenge.
Kurlygirll08 has started a summer protective style hair challenge for the summer.  Her hair challenge will end September 21st.
Hair challenges force you to be accountable to yourself.  If you need a more structured hair challenge then you may need to check out Lovndanaturalme and join her on the zipporah beauty healthy hair challenge.  Zipporah beauty is a natural hair online community site.
If you are really serious about joining a hair challenge then you should check out longhair2014.com website.  This hair challenge is in affect from now until 2014 and they proclaim that in two and a half years everyone should have grown at least fifteen inches of hair.  There’s a registration form and beginning and ending pictures will need to be uploaded.
Video Help
Making YouTube videos can seem daunting to say the least.  And for those of us who dare to make videos, the questions can seem endless. What type of camera to use? What is video editing software? How to use your camera and/or software? And thanks to those few YouTubers out there who don’t mind sharing the knowledge to help us make the best videos possible.
TheCreativeLady has uploaded three YouTube tips videos that I think are great.  I’ve already incorporated some of the simple changes that she suggested to make better quality YouTube videos.
Lisa3876 has several videos on her channel giving YouTube tips, adsense earnings advice and YouTube partner program information.
DKJames5 has recently began a video series to help others maneuver around making YouTube videos.  She uploaded a video on how to make a video intro.
Please take a minute and check out these YouTubers and let them know MsRosieVelt from “The Curly Buzz” sent you!
